The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) led by Mr. Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria undertook an industrial visit to the National Electric System Operator (ONS) in Brasilia on 26th March 2026.
The National Electric System Operator (Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico – ONS) is an independent, non-profit organization, responsible for coordinating and controlling the operation of Brazil’s electricity generation and transmission systems. It ensures that power supply across the country is delivered safely, reliably, and efficiently by managing the dispatch of energy from various sources including, hydro, thermal, wind, and solar, while maintaining the stability of the national grid.
The delegation was received by Renata Crusius dos Santos from the ONS Institutional and Governmental Relations. An institutional presentation was delivered by Adel Mendonça de Oliveira, Electrical Engineer and Specialist in Energy Studies at ONS, who provided an overview of the Brazilian electric system, highlighting key operational dynamics, emerging challenges, and future outlooks. The session also showcased the Open Architecture Open Data Portal, demonstrating Brazil’s commitment to transparency and data accessibility in the energy sector.
Thereafter, the delegation toured the Operations Control Center, gaining firsthand insight into real-time system management and coordination. The visit also included a stop at the ONS cultural space, which illustrates the history and evolution of electricity in Brazil.
Representatives from the Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in Brasília, led by Mary Kirui, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., also participated in the visit and facilitated engagements between the two sides.
