The Embassy commemorated Wangari Maathai Day on 3rd March 2022 with Ambassador Lemarron Kaanto planting a tree at Brasilia’s ARIE do Bosque Park. Amb. Kaanto also installed a commemorate plaque paying tribute to the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate.
In his remarks, Amb. Kaanto affirmed the symbolic and ecological importance of planting trees and thanked the Government of the Federal District of Brazil for joining the Embassy in paying homage to the rich legacy of Professor Wangari Maathai.
He was joined by Renata Zuquim, Head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Government of the Federal District and Thúlio Moraes, Executive Secretary of the Brasilia Environment Institute.
The Ambassador later hosted the African Diplomatic Corps, members of the Kenyan Diaspora and the general public for a screening of the award-winning documentary “Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathai” at the Bank of Brazil Cultural Centre.
Amb. Kaanto encouraged the audience to take inspiration from the documentary and the tireless dedication of Professor Wangari Maathai towards the preservation of the environment.
