The UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development was held from 17th -20th October, 2016 in Quito, Ecuador. The aim of the conference was to define a New Urban Agenda building on the outcomes of previous UN Conferences on Human Settlements namely; Habitat I (1976) and II (1996), and other major UN summits and conferences in the economic, social and environmental fields.
Attended by more than 36,000 participants; Kenya’s delegation to the conference was led by Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Environment Prof. Judi Wakhungu. The delegation included Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN Habitat Amb. Prof. Sam Ongeri, Principal Secretaries in the Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development Mrs. Mariamu El Maawy (Lands) and Arch. Aidah Munano (Housing and Urban Planning). Kenya’s Ambassador to Brazil Isaac Ochieng attended the conference.
